Tooth Crowns

Give Your Tooth a Second Chance with a Crown

The trouble with tooth damage is that it’s permanent; unlike other parts of the body, your teeth do not contain the cells necessary for self-repair or regeneration. Therefore, restorative treatment is necessary to fix teeth that are compromised, and in many cases, a tooth crown offers the optimal solution.

A tooth crown, or dental crown, is a replica of the top portion of your tooth (also called a crown). The restoration is placed and bonded over a tooth to fix and preserve it from further damage, and to improve the tooth’s overall appearance.

When Dental Crowns Are Most Effective

A dental crown can be made from lifelike porcelain or zirconia; from metal; or from a combination of metal and porcelain, depending on your exact needs. Before placing the crown, Dr. Nielsen will carefully prepare the tooth by sculpting a small amount of its structure, making room for the crown to fit naturally among the teeth around it. Usually, a tooth crown is recommended when:

  • A tooth cracks or breaks
  • A tooth becomes excessively worn-down (such as from bruxism)
  • A tooth is weakened from root canal therapy
  • A tooth receives a large tooth filling
  • A tooth requires cosmetic improvement
  • A tooth is lost (a crown can support a dental bridge, or be supported by a dental implant)
