Preventive Checkups and Cleanings
Regular dental checkups and cleanings are vital to preventing cavities, gum disease, and other issues from developing, or at least from becoming more serious threats to your oral health. When combined with a good dental hygiene routine at home, regularly scheduled checkups and cleanings can help you avoid most common dental health complications.
Cleaning Plaque and Tartar
Plaque is a biofilm produced by oral bacteria clinging to your teeth. The film protects the bacteria as they consume nutrients and convert them into harmful substances, like acids and toxins. The plaque that your toothbrush and floss miss will eventually calcify into tartar, which is insoluble and cannot be brushed and flossed away.
During a dental cleaning, one of our experienced hygienists will professionally remove the films of tartar and plaque that are gathered on your teeth, reducing your risks of developing a related dental issue.
Checking for Signs of Trouble
Besides cleaning away the bacterial threats to your dental health, regular visits also include visual inspections by Dr. Nielsen to check for signs that could indicate trouble. Weakened enamel around your teeth; irritated gum tissues; problems with your bite’s alignment; signs of structural tooth damage; tissue abnormalities that could mean oral cancer; and more can be detected early through regular checkups.
Often, Dr. Nielsen may also utilize digital X-rays and an intraoral camera for a better view of the areas in your mouth that are more difficult to see. If necessary, the examination will help Dr. Nielsen choose an appropriate cosmetic or restorative dental treatment.
